Personal project / 2014
We wanted Urban Walks to be the kind of app that would allow visitors and curious locals to see New York the way we do — a city of larger-than-life characters, historical dramas, breathtaking architecture, and rich cultures.
Process
After all initial design decisions were made the most tedious part of adding new tours to the app was drawing new maps. It took almost two weeks to manually make the first design prototype using Open Street Map screenshots as a reference. After that, we developed a Houdini based pipeline to get the same stylized maps directly out of raw XML data in minutes.
When designing interactive experiences it's quite important to think about animations and transitions, as they are essential for guiding the user through different screens. If done well, it can provide a sense of place and location.
